Do

something

cool with  God this

summer.

Change your heart

Change your mind

Change your world

   Poverty Plunge

The Scriptures are clear: God cares for the poor and marginalized and has called us to be involved with them--to bring them the good news of Jesus Christ.  Unfortunately, much of our discipleship has ignored this important command.

This three day, unique poverty simulation is designed to help educate participants about the realities of our world in need, God's heart for the poor and how we can better live out God's call for us to connect with the poor.  The experience will stretch participants outside their "comfort zones" to face their own materialism, cultural values and need to refocus on biblical mandates.

 Location: Kokomo, IN

Age: Open to High School Youth (20 Max)

Cost: 45.00 includes meals and lodging

Urban Plunge

Still seeking a hands-on mission opportunity for your youth this summer but not sure where to start or how to plan such a big project?

Why not consider a trip to the inner city for an

urban mission experience?

Location:  Kokomo, IN

Who: Jr. or Sr. High (20 Max)

Cost for 5 days: $75.00 includes all meals

and lodging. Two to five day trips available.

There are also day long or overnight trips for families with children and adult only groups.   Call for details.

“… prayer walk was a new and moving experience, the Poverty Simulation Game was great fun and illustrated poverty in unexpected ways, …”

“Most significant … was the change in outlook ...  Our youth are now considering those who live in poverty in a completely new way. When before "poor people" were always far away and impersonal, now they have faces, names and personalities. Many of our teens have thought of poverty as an unfortunate choice that some people make, now they see that it is a little more complicated than that.”

“This was a good experience … we can't wait to do it again.

FYI

Kokomo is located in central Indiana about 50 miles north of Indianapolis.  Kokomo schools are studied by national researchers as it has the same percentage of cultural identities as a large urban center, but on a smaller scale.

Kokomo Urban Outreach works in 10 under-resourced neighborhoods throughout the city. Neighborhoods that we call “Neighborhoods of Hope”.  There are many projects that work teams can help us accomplish, from painting to preparing meals for children and everything in between.

Most teen groups will stay in what we call the KUO House which is a mobile home with two large rooms for sleeping (on air mattresses), a kitchen, and one bathroom with one shower. The house will sleep about 20(15 youth and 5 adult leaders).  Adult and family groups may opt to stay at nearby motels.

The cost is 15.00 per day per person for groups who stay in the KUO house which includes 3 meals, snacks and overnight lodging. Most events are 3-5 days. Groups staying in motels may eat with us for $3.00 per meal per person. For those who are coming for one day there is no charge and meals will be provided during working hours.

Purdue Senior, Grant Langbehn will host all teams this  summer.  Grant and all of the rest of the staff at KUO are well trained in the area of poverty, “Radical Hospitality”  and safety.  Safety is our number one concern and we do everything in our power to keep all activities safe.  For more details about the Poverty Plunge or the Urban Plunge, call Jeff Newton at 765.461.9618
