The Church

Trinity United Methodist church was planted in the neighborhood eighty years ago by other area churches to provide ministry to the neighborhood. Over the years the neighborhood and the church has changed. Today, Trinity has about 30 people in worship on Sunday Morning, that are made up of non–judgmental, caring, mature Christians who are working on becoming “The Church Next Door”

The Supervising Pastor

Jeff Newton is the Pastor of Trinity U.M.C. and the Director of Kokomo Urban Outreach. Jeff has had over 20 years of pastoral experience serving small, rural, mid-sized and larger urban churches. Jeff has a heart for the church, urban ministry , and helping people discern their call into ministry.

Working with Higher Education

Kokomo Urban Outreach desires to work with students that desire a ministry and outreach experience. Our goal is not only to give students expedience by to also help students meet the requirements of their higher education program. In order to meet that goal, we are willing to work with Higher Education Institutions, tailoring the student's experience to satisfy internships requirements. Full Time Internship Details

Interns will gain ministry experience in three areas: Urban Outreach Ministry, Pastoral Care, and other Community Service

All interns will work 40 hours per week and attend a weekly meeting, to complete a 8-12 week internship unit.
Interns will work with the pastor of the church experiencing the different aspects of ministry.

Urban Outreach Ministry (30 hours per week)

Participate and help at activities planned by Kokomo Urban Outreach during the time of the internship.
Interns will be exposed to street ministry around the local church by:

Planning a block party/cook out
- Plan menu
- Plan activities(games, music, etc)
- Secure volunteers
- Promote event
- Self evaluation of event
Have a presence in the community by living in the community and being a part of the local community. Make self available to families in Apartment complex
- Work with those who will be arriving in Kokomo for Mission Trips, working with director of Kokomo Urban Outreach by arranging room and board, projects to be completed and day to day supervision.

Pastoral Care (8 hours per week)

Interns work with the pastor and will experience the following:

Once a week visit a homebound member or someone in the hospital
Provide leadership on Sunday Morning to be negotiated with pastor possible areas of leadership(leading music, planning a worship service, teaching a Sunday School Class etc.)
Preach one time during internship

Requirements

Start Date: This ministry is tailored to the individual, you may start any time you can commit to six-twelve weeks.

Weekly Time Commitment: 40 hours in actual ministry

Be present in worship the majority of the time.

Housing: Full time interns(40 hours per week) will be provided with free room and board.

Stipend: A small weekly stipend will be given.

Time Commitment: Expect to work 40 hours per week usually working 5 days with two days off. Preferred work week is Wednesday-Sunday however, this is flexible and can be negotiated even on a week to week basis. Generally, the work day is not a straight 8 hour day. There may be needs in the morning and then in the evening. Occasionally there may be more than 8 hours needed in one day. If work teams arrive during internship, schedule will need to be flexible.
